Grain Stability: Ensuring Safe Carriage of Bulk Grain Cargo

Grain stability refers to a vessel’s ability to resist capsizing or listing due to the movement of bulk grain inside cargo holds. Grain, particularly in partially filled holds, can shift during the voyage, creating a free surface effect that may significantly reduce the vessel’s stability.

To mitigate these risks, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) enforces specific requirements through the International Grain Code (IMO Resolution MSC.23(59)).

Grain stability ensures that vessels carrying bulk grain remain safe and stable throughout the voyage, even as the cargo settles or shifts. This is critical for preventing grain shift and capsizing, ensuring compliance with international regulations, and protecting the crew, cargo, and vessel.
